If you have a son or daughter heading off to college, here’s an insurance question worth asking before they leave: What happens when they have car trouble and you’re two or three hours away? A dead battery in a campus parking lot, a flat tire on the interstate, or keys locked inside the car can quickly turn into a stressful situation especially late at night.
That’s why roadside assistance is one coverage we recommend parents consider adding to a college student’s auto insurance. Depending on the insurance company and policy, roadside assistance may provide towing, jump-start service for a dead battery, help changing a flat tire, fuel delivery, and assistance when keys are locked inside the vehicle. Instead of your student trying to figure out who to call, they have a number to contact for help.
Going away to college is also a good reason to review the entire auto policy. Tell us where the student will be attending school, whether they’re taking a vehicle, and where that vehicle will normally be kept. If they’re attending school away from home without a vehicle, some insurance companies offer a student-away-at-school discount. It’s also worth reviewing deductibles, comprehensive and collision coverage, and uninsured/underinsured motorist protection.
Before you load up the car for college, give our office a call. We’ll take a few minutes to review the policy and make sure everything is set up correctly. You may not be able to prevent that 11:30 PM phone call but having the right coverage can make it a whole lot easier to deal with all for around a 1.00 per month, sometimes less.
